The district has always been a meeting place for artists and intellectuals to gather for animated debates on current affairs and culture.
Saint-Germain-des-Près has always had a certain kind of charm whose mystery continues to surprise and inspire many an author. The district became the meeting place of the literary and artistic universe in the 17th century.
A large number of artists came to live here: painters such as Delacroix, Ingres or Manet; writers such as Racine, Balzac or Georges Sand; and actors such as Mounet-Sully.
For jazz fans, Saint-Germain-des-Près is also home to a number of old cellars where different jazz groups play through the night.
