The Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud, a major historical French religious site, is a UNESCO heritage site. With four priories and 14 hectares, it is the largest monastic collection in Europe.
Founded in 1101 by Robert d’Arbrissel, the Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud is a prestigious historical site that bears the memory of its benefactors: Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard the Lionheart, King Henry II of England and Isabelle of Angoulême.
In 1975, thanks to the minister Olivier Guichard and with support from the Pays de la Loire region and the French ministry for culture, the Abbey became a cultural centre.
A site of creativity and training in relation to heritage, Fontevraud welcomes residential artists and a number of students.
